International Women in Engineering Day (#INWED21) takes place annually on 23 June. The event is once again run by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), who have turned INWED into a truly international awareness campaign, raising the profile of women in engineering, and focusing attention on the amazing career opportunities available to women and girls in this exciting industry.
The theme of this year's event is ‘Engineering Heroes’, which celebrates the amazing work that women engineers around the world are doing, not just in response to the pandemic, but also to support lives and livelihoods every day.
INWED 21 is highlighting the best, brightest and bravest women in engineering, who recognise a problem, then dare to be part of the solution; who undertake everyday ‘heroics’ as much as emergency ones.
While the pandemic has affected a number of face-to-face events, there are lots of ways to get involved. Whether that’s using the International Women in Engineering Day resources to make a splash, sharing a Selfie Card on social or taking part virtually or in-person at a planned event or activity, everyone can help promote #EngineeringHeroes together!
Tim Sainty, Membership Director of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) said, “When it comes to the plumbing and heating industry, female engineers have been on the front lines during the pandemic, keeping the nation safe from boiler breakdowns and plumbing emergencies.
“The CIPHE promotes the plumbing and heating industry as a viable career path for all, regardless of gender, race or religion. We have long supported female engineers and the value they bring to the industry and it’s very much a two-way street. The CIPHE has without doubt benefited from the influence of former President, Tracey Richardson, both in her presidential year and in her role on the Board of Trustees. In addition, Building Services Engineer Sylvia Liu, is the first female Chair of the CIPHE’s Hong Kong Branch. Women are very much in demand in the plumbing and heating industry.”
