Licenced to skill!

The CIPHE’s technical credibility has been enhanced with a license to award Chartered Engineer status. It means that even more members can benefit from professional registration.

Professional qualifications can significantly improve career prospects, lead to higher earning potential and provide professional credibility. This is achieved by registration with the Engineering Council – via membership of a professional engineering institution, such as the CIPHE.

Up until now, the Institute has been registering suitably qualified members at Engineering Technician (EngTech) and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) levels. However, after undergoing a licence review by the Engineering Council, the CIPHE will now be able to offer a route to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

This new pathway is something that will appeal to members who can demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment – usually at degree level.

The industry as a whole is trying to increase skill levels and the CIPHE is at the forefront of promoting a professional workforce. The new Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Trailblazer Apprenticeship, which will be in place by September 2017, is an encouraging step in the right direction. After students have successfully completed the course and gained experience, they will be able to apply for Engineering Technician status.

This need not be the end of professional progression. Those already registered as EngTech, will find new opportunities and challenges opening to them if they have the appetite to study further and gain the IEng qualification.

Not everyone is aware of the diverse career paths that exist in the plumbing and heating industry, but with hard work, ambition and determination, newly qualified plumbers could be the chartered engineers of tomorrow. The good news is, the Institute can support them right from the beginning of their journey.

By being a member of the CIPHE, they will be encouraged to take part in CPD activities and will have access to an online e-learning portal. They will also benefit from discounted training courses from around 170 leading Industrial Associates.

Note: The Institute has been granted a licence for IEng and EngTech candidates for a further five years and a licence for one year for CEng. To date, the CIPHE has 940 Engineering Technicians and 107 Incorporated Engineers in membership.
