Are you up for the CEng challenge?

Our new National President, Christopher Northey, is just one of our members holding Chartered Engineer (CEng) status via the Engineering Council UK. The CIPHE is one of the awarding bodies able to register individuals at Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng), with CEng being the highest professional qualification available.

While it may seem out of reach for many, you may be surprised to know that you can attain CEng without holding a Degree or Masters. The truth is, although it’s not easy, the individual, work-based, assessment process – designed specifically for people who do not hold academic qualifications – provides a clear route of progression.

Chartered Engineers ‘develop solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change and/or they may have technical accountability for complex systems with significant levels of risk.’

Therefore, to be considered for this status, Chartered Engineers must demonstrate:

  • The theoretical knowledge to solve problems in new technologies and develop new analytical techniques
  • Successful application of the knowledge to deliver innovative products and services and/or take technical responsibility for complex engineering systems
  • Accountability for project, finance and personnel management and managing trade-offs between technical and socio-economic factors
  • Skill sets necessary to develop other technical staff
  • Effective interpersonal skills in communicating technical matters.

The route isn’t for everyone, but for those who are interested the CIPHE can offer guidance and support throughout your application.
