A recent agreement between the British Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change and the Norwegian Minister for Petroleum and Energy shows a balanced approach to the future of UK energy consumption. The Chartered Institute for Plumbing and Heating Engineering believes it fits well with the UK’s existing and burgeoning needs.
Principal Technical Officer for the CIPHE, Danny Davis commented, “What’s significant about the agreement is that it focuses on our use of natural gas as a long-term solution as well as highlighting our future requirement for renewable energy and Carbon Capture and Storage (CSS). The joint statement is fairly brief but it shows that our energy needs have been considered seriously and many commitments have been included in detail.”
Natural gas from Norway is seen as a secure energy supply which is low in carbon emissions, compared to other fossil fuels. This makes it ideal for use in the UK, while renewable energy sources are still in a fledgling state.
Added Danny, “Early next year there will be a meeting of UK and Norway officials in London to further address energy and climate issues. It will be interesting to see what we can learn from our neighbours to benefit the UK energy industry.”
