The creation of the Register of Plumbers was in direct response to growing industry concern about the number of unqualified installers passing themselves off as plumbers without qualifications. It is a voluntary register covering all types of plumbing. To register, installers must hold the following plumbing and water safety qualifications:
• Formal Qualification/Appropriate Experience in Plumbing:
City and Guilds Craft/Advanced Craft Certificate
Plumbing Mechanical Engineering Services
S/NVQNVQ 2 (6089) or S/NVQ Level 3 (6089)
Water Regulations Certificate
• Appropriate practical experience in the following areas:
Hot and Cold water supply pipework
Discharge pipework and drainage
• Plus appropriate Continuing Professional Development
The CIPHE has held the Register of Plumbers for over 100 years. It changed its name in 2004 to include heating and since that time has held responsibility for both the plumbing and heating industries. Under the Charter granted in 2008 it has been given the right to set up and manage registers for all aspects of the plumbing and heating engineering industry throughout the UK.
Members of the public are able to search the Register of Plumbers to find Registered Plumbers by postcode online at www.ciphe.org.co.uk or by telephoning the Institute on 01708 472791.
There is also a facility for concerned customers to verify an installer’s registration details in case of doubt. Click here to visit the verify page.
